EMILY SCHROEDER'S STORY

When More Stopped Being Better

PERSONAL STORY

Most people think overtraining starts in the gym. Looking back, I don’t think mine did. I think it started with the belief that if I was always moving, I was always improving.

How long have you been using Tiimo and Gentler Streak, and how did you first discover them?

I downloaded Gentler Streak in December 2022 because I love data. I’m a data scientist, so I naturally gravitate toward numbers, trends, and anything that helps me understand what’s going on. At the time, I was exercising six or seven days a week, sometimes for two or three hours a day. I genuinely believed I was doing everything right. People complimented my discipline, and honestly, I wore that like a badge of honor.

The problem was that I had reached a point where I didn’t really know how to rest anymore. If I felt good, I worked out. If I felt tired, I usually worked out anyway. Rest days made me uncomfortable because I felt like I was losing progress. More was always better - or at least that’s what I believed.

The funny part is that Gentler Streak was quietly telling me something different the whole time. I’d open the app, see that it was recommending recovery or a lighter day, and I’d think, “Yeah, but I feel okay.” Then I’d go do another hard workout anyway. Looking back, I wasn’t ignoring the app because it was wrong. I just wasn’t ready to believe that recovery was every bit as important as training.

Eventually my body made the decision for me. After years of pushing harder and harder, I overtrained. Recovery wasn’t something that took a few days - it took months. The thing I’d always relied on to help me feel stronger suddenly became the thing that made me feel worse. That was incredibly hard, not just physically but mentally, because exercise had become such a big part of how I measured myself.

During those months, Gentler Streak became a completely different app to me - not because the app changed, but because I did. Instead of asking myself, “How much can I do today?” I started asking, “What does my body actually need today?” That one shift completely changed my relationship with fitness.

I still love training. I still love lifting weights, walking, tracking my heart rate, and looking at recovery data. I’m still a total data nerd. The difference is that the numbers don’t control my decisions anymore - they help inform them.

In fact, that happened today. Today was supposed to be a strength training day. I woke up underslept, exhausted, and I’m just a couple of days away from my period. After spending an hour at the pool with my daughter in Oklahoma heat, I knew I only had about half a workout in me. A few years ago, I would’ve forced the strength workout because it was on the schedule. Instead, I chose an easy indoor walk and decided to move my lift to tomorrow. That probably doesn’t sound like a huge decision, but for me, it represents years of growth.

Recovery taught me that consistency isn’t about doing the hardest workout every single day. It’s about making the decision that gives you the best chance to still be training months and years from now.

Gentler Streak didn’t magically fix my relationship with exercise. It simply kept reminding me of something I wasn’t ready to hear until I had no choice but to listen: recovery isn’t falling behind. It’s part of moving forward.
