As Outdoor Season Kicks In, The Outsiders iPhone App Adds the Advanced Power Metrics to Match
The Outsiders, a performance training app by Gentler Stories, the indie studio behind Apple Watch App of the Year 2022 and a 2024 Apple Design Award winner, releases version 1.6 with four new advanced metrics for power-based training. Paired with Personal Goals, released earlier this year, the update gives athletes the analytical depth to train with more precision and clearer overview of how they are progressing.
Advanced Metrics for Advanced Folks
If you love the stats and how they can support your training, this may be up your alley. The Outsiders 1.6 brings four new metrics that work together to give the full scope of a session - not just how hard you went, but how well you executed it. That distinction is what separates training that compounds over time from training that just accumulates fatigue.
Relative Intensity - tells you how demanding the session was relative to your personal limit (cycling only).
Variability Index - shows how you paced the effort and if it was in sync with your goal.
Efficiency Factor - indicates power output relative to heart rate. A rising trend means your aerobic engine is getting stronger.
Aerobic Decoupling - shows how well you held that efficiency over the full session.
These metrics are available for rides and runs with power data, you can find them in the session summary. Advanced metrics are part of Outsiders Absolute.

Personal Training Goals
Personal training goals, added at the beginning of the year, give athletes a clear, trackable target to work toward, be it cycling miles, running time, energy burned in the gym, and more. An update shortly after also brought customization options to the Today and Progress tabs, so you can personalize the user experience to your liking.
Here is how it works:
Pick your poison
Select a metric: total distance, total time, total active energy, total training load, total elevation gain, or total time in zone (heart rate or power)
Set a time frame: week, month, or year
To get a taste of it, everyone can set one training goal. Setting an unlimited number of goals is part of Outsiders Absolute.

About The Outsiders
The Outsiders is a performance training app for cyclists, runners, and other athletes who are serious about their training. Built for those who are internally motivated, often self-coached, and already live deep down the fitness data rabbit hole. The app balances intensity with recovery, so progress keeps moving forward, with hand-picked metrics, no clutter, and a design that is as deliberate as the training it supports.
At its core sits a daily Training Readiness score, built on the balance between recent training effort and what your body is currently adapted to handle. The Progress tab serves the bigger picture: training goals, load and intensity patterns, and fitness trends across Endurance Fitness and VO₂ max. Workout summaries go deeper than usual, with everything essential and power-based metrics. The Apple Watch app keeps Training Readiness and Training Load Ratio a glance away.
All data stays with you on your device: no servers, no user profiles, no feeding your data to AI models or investors.
